New Jersey food scene lauded by Saveur magazine

I know it and you know it - our great Garden State is home to some pretty amazing food.

And now, the world will know it, too.

Saveur, a gourmet food and wine magazine and website, is dedicating the month of April to New Jersey's culinary scene. Jersey Month, as they are calling it, is a celebration of "the unsung hero state of American eating."

"Ask anyone about their hometown food and you'll eventually get them going," the magazine's Max Falkowitz writes."But in Jersey, well, maybe there's something in the water, but Jersey folks take local food pride to scary levels. You think Angelenos have opinions about tacos, or Chicagoans get defensive about pizza — until you ask two people from Jersey to tell you about the state's best diner. Duck for cover. It gets ugly."

Here is some of what the magazine has done so far: Beachfront dining, the dishes you'll find only in New Jersey (including pork roll and disco fries, of course), Turkish bread in Patterson, Portuguese food in Newark, cooking with pork roll, a tribute to Wawa, and a profile of Knife & Fork Inn in Atlantic City. The stories can be found at www.saveur.com/tags/jersey-month.

"We'll take a look at the historical underpinnings of the state's obsession with good food," Falkowitz writes. "We'll investigate hyper-regional specialties that you won't find anywhere else. We'll visit and chat with communities of immigrants, people who've uprooted themselves from virtually every nation on Earth to settle in Jersey and establish food hubs that beat the pants off anything you'll get in most big American cities. And we'll show you where to get some pretty fantastic meals."

We're looking forward to it, Saveur. Thank you for noticing us.
